My web development and UX/LX design journey was inspired by an introduction to e-learning design and
interactivity. In
the midst of lockdown in 2020, I started assisting an e-learning designer build online courses. We turned Word
documents submitted by SMEs into interactive learning experiences through creating seamless layouts, designing
clear-cut infographics, as well as writing and building engaging learner activities.
I wanted to learn more about how
technology could improve people's lives,
so I completed a full-stack web development course followed by an Advanced Diploma in User-Centred Design at
Red
&
Yellow Creative School of Business in Cape Town.
During this time, I was able to apply my interests in mental health, music and technology-enhanced learning to
a year-long independent study project: a
singing platform for individuals with social anxiety. This gave me a sense of purpose,
and sparked more ideas and excitement about the direction I was taking.
Design also taught me some invaluable life lessons, like the benefits of
letting the ego go – the best ideas really do evolve in a group and focusing on users’ needs is what produces
the most efficient solutions.
I have a background in journalism, studying Film and Media Production at The University of Cape Town and
writing articles for publications such as GroundUp or Africa is a Country. Pre-Covid,
I worked as an events photographer and created a mini
documentary about the tango community in Cape Town.
Things I love: the ocean, learning to play musical instruments (violin, Irish bouzouki, bodhrán and bones),
and dancing tango.
